August 31st - My last day at work, colleagues from Geneva came for a last lunch in Grenoble. Walter is Argentinian, he is good colleague and always appreciate adding a bit of humor to subjects. 10am, Walter came to my desk, always supportive to our choice to visit South America...and in the middle of a discussion I hear "you know, it is like Mexicana Airlines, this 85 Years old company that just got bankrupted today and all fligths are cancelled"... I acknowledge the point.. not sure what to say... was Walter joking ? or am I in serious trouble as Mexicana is the company that is supposed to take us from Mexico to Brazil ?...
I let the morning go... came back home... closing bags for next morning departure.. and finally went online.. in case of..
"All Mexicana operations are stopped undefinitely"
This was not a last joke of Walter !
My heart jumped - decided to call for help - we are screwed !
American Airlines - Paris offices...
>> Hello, we have a round the world ticket but when we reach Mexico, we are stuck there... can you help ?
AA: Oh yes, I understand... let me see
Me: thinking: "well, if I got something out of this I would be extremely lucky"
AA: we can re-route you to Texas and get you back down to Brazil the same day - is this OK ?
Me: You are amazing! yes that would be great.
AA: Do you have frequent flyer with AA ?
Me: No
AA: OK I will create them rigth now and get your numbers to all fligths
Me: Wow, OK, you are truly amazing
AA: Do you want us to assign seats for all your fligths now ?
Me: Is this possible that far up in advance ?
AA: sure - lets do this
Me: Silently amazed
AA: I see you have a great, balanced, trip in front of you, you shall have a great time
Coming in a desperate mode... getting back with new fligths and nice benefits for free
That was my best customer service in years !!!
(thanks walter, even not a joke, this revealed a great story)
